Unit Statistical Data

In accordance with the Michigan Workers Compensation Statistical Plan, every insurance company authorized to write workers’ compensation insurance within the state of Michigan shall file with CAOM complete unit statistical information. Unit statistical data is the audited exposure, premium, and loss information for a policy. Unit statistical data is used in the following product and services:

  • Determining class rate
  • Production of experience modification factors
  • Actuarial analysis
  • Other CAOM products and services

Reporting Guidelines

The Michigan Workers Compensation Statistical Plan is provided for assistance with reporting unit statistical data.

Note: Late unit statistical reports are subject to fines in accordance with the Michigan Workers’ Compensation Statistical Plan.

Submission Requirements

All unit statistical data must be submitted to CAOM using one of the options below: 

  • Electronic files – The data must be formatted using the standard WCSTAT record layouts. All file submissions must include a transmittal record. The WCSTAT record layouts, submission file requirements and transmittal record layout can be found in the WCIO Workers Compensation Data Specifications Manual on the Workers Compensation Insurance Organizations (WCIO) web site www.wcio.org.
    • Before submitting electronic files, data reporters must pass electronic submission testing with CAOM.
    • Electronic files (test and production) must be submitted via the Compensation Data Exchange (CDX). Information relating to CDX can be found on the www.cdxworkcomp.org web site. Additional information can also be found in CAOM circular letter #253
    • Questions relating to CDX should be addressed to  dataservices@caom.com.
  • BEEP Online Entry – Bureau Entry and Edit Package (BEEP) is a web based application available for the electronic reporting of unit statistical data and is accessible through the CDX web site www.cdxworkcomp.org. BEEP creates an electronic file that must be submitted via CDX.

Unit Statistical Data Editing

All unit statistical data received at the CAOM is subject to editing to evaluate the reported data for accuracy, completeness, and reasonability. Some edits fail as a result of errors in the data submission. Some edits allow the acceptance of unit statistical reports with warnings. Other error edits call for the rejection of a unit statistical report. Failed edits require the resubmission of corrected data.

Edit Notification

Data Reporters are made aware of failed edits for unit statistical reports via WCCRIT file on the CDX web site www.cdxworkcomp.org. WCCRIT specifications can be found on the WCIO web site www.wcio.org.

Edit Explanations

Data Reporters may send edit explanations. All explanations must adequately explain the reason for the edit failure and are subject to CAOM approval.
